They can handle New England’s frosty temperatures, they have the most stunning texture and structure, their color only gets more vibrant the colder it gets and their lively pallete is so beautiful, especially after the leaves fall in New England and it’s super drab. I mean…. what’s not to love?! 🥬💜🌸

HARD TO BEAT IRIS LEAVES FOR AN AUTUMN CENTERPIECE IMO!! 🩷
I always back them up with a simple grass for fullness. The variegated contrast is so pretty here with the simple pink and green palette. After the FALL of the leaves in New England, when things start turning brown, a soft, crisp, palette is so pretty for the second half of autumn (and beautiful after a flurry of snow). And the best part….the colder it gets the more vivid the colors in the cabbage and kale! 🥬❄️🩷

More proof that the right planter is everything!
This client originally had two basic black urns that were too tall to plant proportionately without obstructing that incredibly charming entrance. Urns are also so tricky to plant because there is very little soil space. This entrance screams for a lush planting to show it off. The way that argyle pattern in the window repeats in the planters and the door knocker ring reflects the circles in the center of them makes for the perfect marriage of planter with architecture!

So yeah, it’s an extremely invasive plants that steals nutrients and sunlight from other plants so as a rule, I rip it out wherever I see it. But I always leave a little bit of the vine on this incredibly charming garden shed for its beautiful autumn berries. …. for the 33° forecast tonight! If you are in Massachusetts and have planters, check your forecast, it’s a good idea to cover them tonight. You can just use a light sheet or any large piece of fabric, just gather it at the bottom of the container and close with a piece of duct tape.

Ornamental cabbage and kale are extraordinary. The flower lasts all season long, even through early frosts and its color becomes more vibrant and more beautiful the colder it gets. If you follow me, you know I use a ton of it in my fall installations for designs that last through early snowfall.
